Having been an Isle of Wight Councillor and Chairman of the Children’s Services Select Committee, I am appalled at the options put forward by the Isle of Wight Council and consider that a 4th option should be added, namely “None of the Above”.
As a past parent and family man, it has been my privilege to be a Governor of 4 schools and Chairman of Weston School, Totland Governing Body,spanning a period of 30+ years.
This conservative Council, in their election manifesto, promised to leave the Primaries alone and not introduce changes to the schools. They should be held by the electorate to honour these promises. Our children are entitled to good education, our teachers are entitled to support and security and our parents are entitled to be consulted at all stages and their opinions to be taken on board by the local Councillors in their decision making.
I believe the way forward is to discuss with the Communities the best way to maintain their local primary schools, not just to close them.
